chris boyne once bought me this mechanical self-timer from a booth at the jean-talon flea market. i had held it in awe the week prior, but didn't have the guts to purchase it. he claimed the gesture was in return for picking up his girl from the airport, but i suspect it was more to do with kind-heartedness. the group shot above is an example of its power.

yes it is scenography - i should have put a side note in that mentioned you taught me everything i know about the medium!
woah, I didn't even imagine they made self-timers for shutter release sockets. Here I was devising a way to tie a string to my cellphone, program the alarm clock, set to vibrate, and have another string catch the phone so it falls far enough to trigger the shutter without shaking the camera, when this little bugger can do it all. Thanks for showing me the possibilities.
